OS 9 too large?

I own a 1400cs running os 8.1, and I would like to purchase os 9. However that takes alot of space, and I want to know if it is possible to install it without buying more memory, or if not, with more memory.

Macintosh PowerBook 1400cs, Mac OS 8.6 or Earlier

Some older Macs that support 9 won't allow you to install it unless you uncheck install Mac OS 9 drivers. If you are installing with a 9.1 retail CD which looks like User uploaded file* and it doesn't appear to be working to allow you to do a custom install of just what you need, and it appears you have the disc space, make sure to uncheck the install drivers before continuing with the installer.
